Dr Michael Barakate graduated from Medicine (UNSW) in 1996 and completed his Master of Surgery degree (U.Syd) in 2003. His surgical training includes dual fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery and Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr Barakate reviews and treats patients with thyroid and parathyroid conditions when surgery is needed. The types of conditions he manages include thyroid nodules and lumps, thyroiditis and Graves’ Disease, multinodular goitre, atypical thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. We also see patients for the management of hyperparathyroidism and parathyroid adenoma.
After a series of teaching hospital rotations (Westmead, Prince of Wales, Liverpool, Westmead / Sydney Children’s) in the NSW Otolaryngology training scheme, including 12 months in the Oxford University Hospitals, UK, he then embarked on fellowship training in the University of Michigan USA focusing on oncological surgery. Dr Barakate has an active interest in teaching and research in ENT Head and Neck, being involved in several peer reviewed publications and abstracts.
A faculty member of the University of Notre Dame Australia, School of Medicine, Dr Barakate has expertise and experience in the surgical management of diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. He has public hospital admitting rights for adults and children through Auburn Hospital and private hospital admitting rights through Macquarie University Hospital and Prince of Wales Private Hospital.
