Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, is a condition where your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone.
The thyroid gland has a number of important roles such as, regulating the body’s metabolic rate and the hearts and digestive function.
Here are 5 steps to consider for people with hypothyroidism
- Iodine, is required for the body to synthesize the thyroid hormone. Sources of iodine are oysters, seaweed and bread (with iodized salt)
- Selenium, is required for the liver and kidney to make the thyroid hormone (T3 active form). Sources of selenium are Brazil nuts, fish and seafood.
- Avoid excessive consummation of cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli and cassava. Especially people with low iodine intake and have goiter. A recommendation for patients is to cook the vegetables to help reduce its negative impact
- Avoid gluten, as it can be a issue for some hypothyroidism patients. The immune system, can sometimes confuse components of gluten with thyroid tissue and attack the thyroid tissue instead. A recommendation for patients with a underactive thyroid is to get tested for celiac disease.
- Limit your intake on soy foods, as it affects the absorption of the hormones that you might be taking.
